Mrs. HS Balls was born on March 23, 1865 as Amelia Alice Elizabeth Adkins, in King William’s Town. She was the daughter of Henry James Adkins, a Gonubie retailer , and Sarah Adkins née Spalding. She later married Herbert Sandleton Ball, a railroad superintendent of Cape Town , and the couple lived in Cape Town. The young bride received the coveted sweet chutney recipe as a gift from her mother, a recipe that has already been passed down from family to mother for generations. With the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, the chutney was produced on a small scale, and given as gifts to friends or sold to church bazaars. It became popular and the Ball kitchen was transformed into a temporary production line. As demand for it increased, Amelia and Herbert, with the help of Cape businessman Fred Metter, increased production. Metter was also responsible for designing the octagonal bottle that is still used for the chutney today. The Woodstock factory opened in 1917 to meet the growing demand for the chutney, and as the chutney exports to Great Britain increased, an even larger facility was later opened in Diep River . In 1962, Amelia died at the age of 97, with the peace that the secret recipe was only revealed to her son and grandson. Over the years, Mrs HS Ball’s was part of Unilever Foods and in April 2013 it became a subsidiary of Tiger Consumer Brands Limited.
